Jean NICOLAI

about me

I have to admit that I started in photography at a very early age.

Looking at the cover photograph showing an important part of my family in May 1955, you will notice the little boy on the front row in the middle of the image, hiding behind a little plastic camera. Indeed, I must have been no more than 4 years old  when I set my first steps in the job. I was born in a gifted family, my father and grandfather were sculptors and all family members but one were musicians. Regularily, at family reunions you were expected to bring your musical instrument and perform, specially on noisy Sunday gatherings.

As my 7 year older sister (in the white dress on the photograph) became a professional photographer herself, I had ample opportunities to learn the job from the inside. I had to stand up on a chair to look into the developer and fixing baths and to get used to the smell of the liquids and the shine of the olive-green shine of the darkroom lighting bulbs. All the necessary darkroom handlings were instructed in a temporarely converted bedroom at the first floor of our house just outside the citycentre of Hasselt, next to my bedroom.

Later, when my sister got married, she left the parental house. I was left behind without darkroom equipment and I needed to invest in new materials to continue my premature photography business, because I got used to have an 'income': I took the snapshot-photographs, while my sister took care of the developing and printing. After finishing my middle school, I went to Art School in Brussels and got a bachelor degree in Photography and Film. I think I graduated in 1972, but it could have been 1971. Anyway, this seems unimportant and is just a stupid little detail.

The kind of photography I want to present in this site is very personal. Images taken on a trip, a walk or on an every day moment. I had to turn my skills from analog to digital, but I tried to do my best.

Thanks for taking a visual interest!
